Suicide Prevention is everyone business!

The first thing to understand is: Suicide IS NOT a Mental Illness.

Suicide is a Situational Disorder!

People often find themselves in a position where 'Life" is coming at them too fast, they feel overwhelmed and there coping skills do not work to reduce the stress fast enough.

They decide they need to "Turn It Off!"

IT is THEM!

When they reach this state they are not thinking clearly and do not realize that turning it off mean turning themselves off.

This action can not be undone.

There are several things which make it easier to reach this state of being overwhelmed.

Using Thomas Joiner's INTERPERSONAL THEORY of Suicide they are:

Thwarted Belongingness: I don't belong to anything important. I have no family, friends, or people who care about me!

Perceived Burdensomeness: I am a burden to everyone! They would be better off if I was not here!

Acquired Capacity: Any interaction of event which reduces the fear of death. Watching people dies, severe trauma, combat, rape, Post Traumatic Stress, childhood victimization, etc.

When these three come together, the possibility of Suicide becomes real!

When someone starts talking...LISTEN!

Do not JUDGE!

Get help if you feel overwhelmed!

Never agree to "Keep a Secret"!

Suicide is almost always preventable!

We want to live!

Reach out!
